The VCM – Heaven and hell

April 29th, 2007

VCM-2007-Chris-Ring.jpg Having the Vienna City in the rear-view mirror, a very special energy is circulating my body . Although my legs are dead, sore and aching, it is an elevating feeling that is dominating my body, as if flying or as having arrived at a holy place inside. Although my body has been drained of all its energy, I do not experience the ordinary kind of fatigue. Of course, I could go to bed immediately, yet this stimulating, refreshing energy makes me want to savour it forever. Read the rest of this entry »

Vienna City Marathon

April 27th, 2007

Asics Racer und Skinfit Top und Short
I run a widget on my dashboard that counts down the days to an event
. I remember after I made the decision to take part at the Vienna City Marathon back in November 2006, I set the widget. Back then it said something like 120 days to the VCM, which appeared to be a long, long time . But now my first marathon lies less than 45 hours in the future .
120 days are equivalent to 4 months, in which I spend a lot of time on the track or rather the Murpromenade, runnning from Haydngasse down South beyond the highway to Feldkirchen and on my long jogs even beyond Kalsdorf and Werndorf. The unusually warm and snow-free winter provided perfect conditions for jogging and thus I feel in very good shape for Sunday. Well, I think I’d rather made sure of that.
A record of 25.273 runners are registered for the VCM, tackling the long distance in front of an expected crowd of 300.000 people. Read the rest of this entry »

Multiple rewards

Erzherzog Johann Lauf Strass - ClassificationsI haven’t posted for quite some time. It’s been busy in the agency while Ulla and I were working on two projects, which are currently being finished and delivered. It’s been a challenging time since one particular job was characterised by shifting currents which we found hard to anticipate and, at times, impossible to handle. Read the rest of this entry »

Aphrodite Trines Ares

February 15th, 2007

Christoph and Sylvia on Kuta Beach, Bali 2006 On my departure from Australia on February 1, 2004, I had promised John and Simone, more jokingly than not I have to admit, to meet them in two years in Bali. After my return home to Austria in May that same year I was caught by the torrents of neglected issues. Reality hit me mercilessly right into my face
. Never having imagined the struggles I would have to face, I had to invest a lot of emotional and physical energy to get my feet back on the ground. This took a lot of time and finally as 2004 was drawing to its close, a thin line of light was appearing on the horizon of my life. Read the rest of this entry »

Vietnam

January 2nd, 2007

viet15_halong_peoplephoto.jpg Looking back at our trip to Vietnam in December 2005, browsing through the photos, I realise that our journey through this diverse, history-packed and sturdy country encapsulated some exceptionally beautiful moments. For me, Sylvia managed to capture in her photos the very essence of this country, and I have added her best shots here . Especially, the motives from Ha Long bay are striking, almost bizarre, like paintings. viet17_halong_manwatching.jpgOn the whole, the colours are thick and rich with an earthy quality as much as are the people – deeply rooted and connected to their land. If we call Vietnam a basic country, we do so only with regards to our western standards of technology. On closer observation, Vietnam turns out to be a complex and complicated land and society, enmeshed in situations of conflict and struggling to compromise their culture with religious demands and economic growth. Still they manage to retain an attitude of humanity, which our western societies are more and more alienated from. This attitude, for me, is oddly reflected in the Vietnamese traffic. Throngs of vehicles, from rickshaw to truck, way to many for the narrow and badly maintained Vietnamese streets, go hither and thither like busy ants. viet11_hanoi_litmanlake.jpgOn our first attempt to cross a street in the old town of Hanoi, Sylvia and I were almost dumbstruck: in no possible way could we see any chance to cross the street, even at a crosswalk.
