A happy beginning in red, a bitter ending in exhaustion

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

DSCF0920.JPG The idea of buying new uniforms for the Ex-Socs was introduced more than a year ago, when our team flourished with an abundance of new Ex-socs followers and a series of great matches on a high level; such a team deserved its own uniform. After the uniforms of Gabersdorf’s first team were stolen in Amsterdam, the time has come to get things moving and within a fortnight we managed not only to order our new uniforms but also finance them out of the pool of Ex-Socs players. A big thank your here goes out to Hans Holler, Wolfgang Huss, Toni Klapsch, Franz Lang (Fa . Graupp), Josef Lappi, Gernot Payer, Stefan Potzinger and Dietmar Pucher for making this wonderful red uniform a reality. (more…)

Carinthia Half Marathon – A great weekend with a great run

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

DSC_8741.JPG The Carinthia Half Marathon served as a test run for my preparation for the Graz Marathon on October 14, 2007. Here is a short account of our two days in Carinthia . You can find the stats of my run at the bottom of the post . DSCF0864.JPG (Clicking on the images brings you to my Flickr-gallery where you can see more shots from Klagenfurt.) A lone run is only half as rewarding as running with someone. Sharing the experience with so many fellow runners, I guess, is one of the major reasons why marathons are so popular. So, too, is taking part at such a race only really fulfilling for me if I can share the experience with someone I love. That’s why I was more than happy that Sylvia finally decided to join me to Carinthia, which made this weekend a short holiday for us – and a relaxing and entertaining one. After having Gwendoline checked by the Vet, we embarked on the 1.20 hrs journey to Klagenfurt where I collected my race number at the Half Marathon finish. Later we drove on to our “EUR 29 B&B” in Wernberg, where we opted for a short power nap. (more…)

Amsterdam with the Ex-socs

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

DSCF0469-exsocs-teamraika.jpg It was a difficult match we had just finished. We had lost 4-6 after a fiery match and, even worse, three of our players had been injured. Franz, our goalkeeper, had broken his finger, Sepp torn his muscle badly, and Horst, worst of all, had broken his colarbone. It was hot when I entered the changing rooms and the over-blown emotion was still there. You could feel it on your skin. Heated discussions were going on and the atmosphere was aggressive. After having shed my boots, I headed for the shower to cool myself off and get a little distance between myself and the heat of the previous match. It is like shifting a gear: when I enter the pitch, I am in soccer-mode. I cannot escape it; it has been installed over so many years of ambition, competition and struggle on the pitch. Sometimes it scares me. Still I see my games with the Ex-socs as a way of coming to terms with this over-the-tops soccer-mode. It is getting better gradually. What helps a lot is that we do not play for points any more, that we do not participate in a league with other teams. It’s just friendlys we play and most of all it is about meeting each other, playing a game and enjoying a few beers afterwards. DSCF0471-exsocs-teams.jpg Since at that time our team had seen a development towards a more agressive and ambitious stance, which, as it were, took its toll, I felt that it was time to introduce, yet again, a more social and laid-back approach. I hadn’t planned it, it was just following an instinct. ?What about going to Amsterdam for a friendly there?? I shouted into the room. No reaction. ?Hey, listen, I know two guys there who play in a team the strength of ours. I could arrange a match. And Amsterdam is a superb city.? Some began to cock their ears and started to ask question. (more…)

The VCM – Heaven and hell

Sunday, April 29th, 2007

VCM-2007-Chris-Ring.jpg Having the Vienna City in the rear-view mirror, a very special energy is circulating my body . Although my legs are dead, sore and aching, it is an elevating feeling that is dominating my body, as if flying or as having arrived at a holy place inside. Although my body has been drained of all its energy, I do not experience the ordinary kind of fatigue. Of course, I could go to bed immediately, yet this stimulating, refreshing energy makes me want to savour it forever. (more…)

Vienna City Marathon

Friday, April 27th, 2007

Asics Racer und Skinfit Top und Short
I run a widget on my dashboard that counts down the days to an event
. I remember after I made the decision to take part at the Vienna City Marathon back in November 2006, I set the widget. Back then it said something like 120 days to the VCM, which appeared to be a long, long time . But now my first marathon lies less than 45 hours in the future .
120 days are equivalent to 4 months, in which I spend a lot of time on the track or rather the Murpromenade, runnning from Haydngasse down South beyond the highway to Feldkirchen and on my long jogs even beyond Kalsdorf and Werndorf. The unusually warm and snow-free winter provided perfect conditions for jogging and thus I feel in very good shape for Sunday. Well, I think I’d rather made sure of that.
A record of 25.273 runners are registered for the VCM, tackling the long distance in front of an expected crowd of 300.000 people. (more…)
